IDENTITY

History: Calvary Internship programs began last year in 2006 for young adults in senior high to become more intimately connected with the work at church, make some money, and expand their leadership skills. The first year went over very well except for the fact that many people didn’t know about it. In late February of this year, the intern positions were opened once again and about ten people applied.

Who: After many weeks of looking through applications and talking it over with senior high small group leaders, Daniel Maat, my boss (a very cool guy by the way), came up with a solution. Instead of having four positions, they opened it to five students. What I call the Calvary Dream Team was chosen…April Johnson, Erin Rietveld, Kyle Schaap, Robbie Elhart, and I, Dustin Attema. We had their first day on June 19.

Why: This is a great question, why do we want to do this? Well, it’s different for everybody. For me, it’s to get a better look at church ministry since that’s what I’m looking at doing. For me and for others, it’s a way to grow in our walk with Christ, to test us, make us better people, serve God, and make new friends.

Where: Well, our “Home Base” is out of Calvary; we will be working in the “Kids Zone” on Sunday mornings, and working with the middle school students on Fridays. Earlier in the week, we prepare things for these days. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we are going to be working with the kids at Briarwood. And of course, we get to jump on the bandwagon for VBS coming the last week of July.

When: The first day, June 19, we went the Grace Adventures camp for team building. This ranged from untying knots without taking one of our hands off the rope, to a high ropes course, bike riding, and climbing sand dunes. Sadly, our last day as Interns is August 24. Time is already flying.

Pray: Please pray for us as we try to seek God’s will in all we do. Pray that we will have grace for each other as we work in close quarters with the same people each day. And pray for the kids we come in contact with that they will see Jesus in us and that they will learn to love him through us.

Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, “ Let the little children come to men, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”.

For all of us Interns, thank you for your support.

God bless,
Dustin Attema
